Prep Football: Poway High puts it all together in 35-6 win over Valley Center

The Poway High football team put together its most complete game of the season a week before it takes on rival Torrey Pines in the Palomar League opener.

Max Washam threw two touchdowns  and ran for another as the No. 6 Titans crushed No. 12 Valley Center 35-6 in game that went to a running clock in the fourth quarter.

After two straight weeks of starting slow, Poway turned it on early against the Jaguars and never let up. The Titans led 14-0 at the half and it could have been worse if it weren’t for a trio of penalties wiping out three punt returns for touchdowns by Ryan Sharpe.

But there were plenty of other scores that did count. Alec Moreno hauled in a  23-yard TD pass and Chris French added a 29-yard TD reception for the Titans (3-2). Nehemiah Gross paced the ground attack with touchdown runs of 28 and 3 yards, as Poway led 28-0 through three quarters.

Washam started the scoring barrage with an 8-yard TD run late in the first quarter.

Poway will face arguably its biggest threat to repeating as Palomar League champions, Torrey Pines, Friday at Torrey Pines High at 7 p.m.

The Falcons are 3-2 and have already proven they can hang with the top teams in the county, as they own a 24-17 win over No. 3 Cathedral Catholic.
