Prep Football: Previews, predictions for Week 8

Palomar League
No. 6 Poway (5-2, 2-0) at No. 15 Westview (6-1, 1-0), Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Poway d. Ramona 37-21; Westview d. Torrey Pines 14-13.

defense came up with four turnovers of its own to pick up the slack. RB Nehemiah Gross continued his solid play, rushing for 191 yards on 27 carries … The Wolverines rallied from 13 down to pull out the win last week. RB Eric Kremp scored twice and the defense shutout Torrey Pines in the second half. Sophomore QB Nate Ketteringham has thrown for over 1,000 yards, giving Westview an aerial attack along with the ground game. … Poway is favored, but Westview can pull off the upset if the Titans turn the ball over like last week.
Prediction: Poway 28, Westview 14.
Rancho Bernardo (1-6, 1-0) at Torrey Pines (3-4, 0-2), Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Rancho Bernardo lost to Del Norte 28-21; Torrey Pines lost to Westview 14-13
Notes: The Broncos lost an emotional one to their crosstown rivals last week. Ivy Adair, who continues to be steady, rushed for 123 yards and had a 56-yard TD run in the loss. The RB defense gave up 384 yards of offense. … The Falcons blew a 13-point halftime lead last week, losing any hopes of capturing a league title. TP was held to just 113 yards rushing, while allowing two rushing TDs. … Expect the Broncos to hang around in this one, but for the Falcons’ defense to step up late.
Prediction: Torrey Pines 35, Rancho Bernardo 20.
Valley League
Del Norte (3-4, 0-1) at San Marcos (3-4, 0-2), Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Del Norte d. Rancho Bernardo 28-21; San Marcos lost to Valley Center 51-6.
Notes: The Nighthawks are coming off their biggest win in school history, beating rival Rancho Bernardo for the first time. QB Parker Lappin completed 11 of 14 passes for 104 yards and scored on a 1-yard run. RB George Liang had 123 yards and scored the put-away TD on a 65-yard burst up the middle. … The Knights have lost two straight. San Marcos had six turnovers last week, but did manage 209 yards rushing. … Expect Del Norte to have similar success on the ground Friday with Mark Gallant and George Liang.
Prediction: Del Norte 35, San Marcos 20.
Pacific League
Tri-City Christian (5-1, 2-0) at Maranatha Christian (2-4, 1-2), Friday 7 p.m.
Last week: Tri-City d. Calvin Christian 48-0; Maranatha lost to Army-Navy 46-6.
Notes: Maranatha lost its second straight last week and it won’t get any easier with the defending Pacific League champion up. Tri-City piled up 380 yards on the ground, highlighted by Ben Giese’s 141-yard performance. The defense scored its second shutout of the year. … Maranatha struggled on the ground last week. QB Jake Kirby threw for 157 yards and a score, but was picked off twice. … Expect Tri-City’s running game to wear down Maranatha in this one.
Prediction: Tri-City 42, Maranatha 14.
