Young bicyclist seriously injured in Poway

POWAY (CNS) – An 11-year-old boy was hospitalized with serious but non- life-threatening injuries today after being struck by a car in Poway while riding his bicycle, authorities said.

The boy was hit in the intersection of Edgemoor Street and Brighton Avenue around 6:20 p.m. Sunday, according to San Diego County sheriff’s Deputy Claudia Valencia.

“It appears the collision occurred after the (boy) failed to stop before crossing the street on his bicycle,” the deputy said in a statement.

The boy, who was not wearing a helmet or any other protective gear, was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital.

The driver of the car was uninjured, Valencia said.

OK I'm looking at the street view in Google and I don't see any traffic controls anywhere. Also with not giving the street the cyclist was crossing I can't determine who was on the through street and who was on the T street. Edgemoor seems to be the through street here, and Brighton the T. Also the time was right about sunset and depending on direction of travel one vehicle operator or the other would have had the sun in their eyes.

Since this was a residential street the driver should have been aware that kids riding bicycles would be out and driven at an appropriate speed to avoid the wreck.

    • Friendly Neighbor

We drive this street every day, as we live two blocks from this location. This is a new, beautiful affordable housing project just completed and occupied less than a year ago. There are MANY MANY children riding haphazardly in and out of the complex driveways, which are across from a condo project and mobile home park. The street is ALWAYS driven at about 20 mph, as there are cars parked on both sides and a lot of activity with the driveways of all of the residences around it. I guarantee you that the person(s) who hit this bicyclist were NOT speeding (it's not possible–the street is one block long and, as I said, crowded) and hitting them had nothing to do with sun blindness. The children are using the street as a playground and their parents need to keep them on the housing project property and/or teach them about watching before darting out into traffic. I've been there, seen it happen, and it could've easily been me. I'm a 57 year old woman who drives a Prius. Not exactly a speed demon, if you know what I mean.

    • Get a clue Opus

Hey Opus, 1, the driver was not cited for speeding.
2, the boy was not wearing a helmet.
3, the boy failed to stop.
4, next time read the article before posting.
5, find a hobby, obviously your'e no detective.

Remember that Sunday we had periods of clouds and sun, and after about 5pm the clouds came in again to stay so the sun shouldn't have been a factor as much as the darkness. Was the cyclist using lights on the bike or wearing bright clothes to be more visible? As "Opus" stated, the car driver should have been aware that kids would be out, but really, shouldn't the parents have some responsibility to teach their kids to ride safely and with helmets?

Perhaps it's finally time for the City of Poway to pay a bit more attention to enforcing the helmet law for minors on bicycle.

    • Dont blame the City

Mary, give me a break. Perhaps it's time the parents started enforcing the helmet law, as in making their kids wear them or else they don't get to ride. And besides an 11 year old is old enough to know right from wrong.

I've read your post's in the past, you like to blame the City for everything so I'm not surprised at your comment. I hope I don't get as bitter when I'm old.

Actually, the sherifs are giving out tickets. My friend's son got one and he was irate. Why is it always the city's fault? I say the child and the parents need to take responsibility for helmet wear. This is a very sad situation and I hope the boy is OK. But always wanting the nanny state to take care of everything is not the solution.
