Newspaper staff, Poway’s Hal Clement honored by Press Club
The San Diego Press Club’s 39th annual awards ceremony included five honors for Pomerado Newspapers staffers plus a special recognition for longtime Poway resident Hal Clement.
The ceremony was held Oct. 23 at the San Diego Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. Officials said the San Diego contest is one of the largest in the country. With more than 450 members, the San Diego Press Club has the third-largest membership in the nation.
Pomerado Newspapers Editor Steve Dreyer placed second in the non daily newspapers features category for his article “Riders on trail to improved lives” that appeared in the Poway News Chieftain.
Staff writer Elizabeth Marie Himchak received four awards for her articles that appeared in the Rancho Bernardo News Journal. In the non daily newspapers division she placed second in the health and medicine category for “RB health study enters fourth decade” and second in the history category for “Speaker’s ancestors go back eight generations in San Diego.”
Himchak also placed third in the science/technology category for “Big Green Bus teaches environmental lessons to seniors” and third in the travel category for “Locals create Web series to show cheap travel is possible.”
Clement was honored with the Harold Keen Award for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism. It is given to a journalist who throughout his or her career has gone above and beyond standard practices for the sake of fairness and truth telling.
His broadcasting career of 41 years included positions at KOGO, KFMB and KGTV. Clement started in sportscasting and became a news anchor in 1984. In September 2011 he retired while working at KGTV Channel 10, where he had been a reporter and anchor since 1998.
During his career, Clement received 14 local Emmy Awards, four Golden Mikes and seven San Diego Press Club awards.
