Poway Soroptimists offers scholarships

Soroptimist International of Poway is offering two scholarships, one to girls between 14 and 17 and the other to women who are the primary financial support for their families.

The deadline for applying for either scholarship is Saturday, Dec. 1.

Girls ages 14 and 17 are encouraged to apply for the annual Violet Richardson Award. Named for the president of the first Soroptimist club, the Violet Richardson Award honors girls who are making a difference through volunteer service.

Each year, the Soroptimists honor girls who donate their time and energy to causes that make the community and world a better place, such as working to end discrimination and poverty, assisting women and children who are victims of domestic violence, or mentoring young girls. One Poway award-winner will receive a $500 scholarship toward her charitable organization.

The Women’s Opportunity Awards program will offer a $1,000 scholarship to a woman who provides the primary source of financial support for her family. Women’s Opportunity Award recipients may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation.

In addition to providing the primary financial support for their families, eligible applicants must be enrolled in, or have been accepted to, a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree program and must demonstrate financial need.

One finalist will be chosen from among the 28 regional winners from other Soroptimist groups for additional awards.

The Poway Soroptimists are part of an international organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls, in local communities and throughout the world.

To apply, contact Poway Soroptimist Mary Mitchell, at 858-206-6532, or marymitchell_1@yahoo.com.
