Family’s legacy continues at Kaminski’s

Kaminski’s BBQ and Sports Lounge, owned and operated by the Kaminski family, has been serving Powegians barbecue since reopening in 2009, in a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere at 12735 Poway Road.

Kaminksi’s employees Wendy Floyd, Michael Corless, Marsha Kaminski and Freddy Garcia.

Originally opened as a grill-your-own steak restaurant in 1965 by Stan and June Kaminski, the restaurant underwent a couple of changes before opening as a barbecue restaurant in 1992. Run by the family for eight years, the Kaminskis sold the restaurant in 2000, when Stan and June Kaminski retired. After a devastating fire in 2007, the Kaminskis decided to rebuild and reopen their barbecue restaurant, which has been going strong ever since.

“My parents wanted to reopen [the restaurant] to pass on their legacy to us,” said Marsha Kaminski.

Kaminski’s offers Texas-style barbecue, meaning the meat is smoked. “Our brisket and pork are smoked for 13 hours,” said Kaminski, “and we make our own ribs.” Kaminski said that almost all the food is freshly made in-house and not processed.

They also do catering for corporate events, weddings, parties and social gatherings in their Super Q catering truck, offering melts, sandwiches, sliders, salads and sides.

More than just a great place for pulled pork and ribs, Kaminski’s offers fresh, homemade food, and a place that’s great for families, as well as a place for adults to get away and enjoy sports and music. Kaminski’s has “every sports package known to man,” said Kaminski, and also has numerous live music nights a week. Thursday night is a live blues jam session, while Friday nights are karaoke and Saturday nights are rock and roll music and dancing.

Kaminski’s also gives back to the community, hosting sports banquets for local high schools and events for fundraising. Their next event will be a St. Patrick’s Day dinner with the Knights of Columbus, 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday, March 17.

Kaminski’s is also gearing up for warmer weather by revamping their outdoor patio seating, putting in new tables and chairs, and a banquette booth. “My parents are always improving [the restaurant] every year, to keep it new and fresh,” said Kaminski.

Kaminski’s BBQ and Sports Lounge is open 11 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. Sunday – Thursday, and 11 a.m. – 1:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. For more information, call 858-748-1106.
