As with the tea party in “Alice in Wonderland,” the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Ed Brown Senior Center on Sunday was filled with fun.
“It was just what we hoped for,” said Marla Cruz, the center’s activity and membership director, about the turnout of 50-plus attendees spanning in age from 10 years to senior.
“The performers were hilarious. … It was hysterical,” Cruz said of the skits performed by the center’s Play Readers Theater group. Students in the center’s ukulele class also performed.
Attendees were encouraged to wear silly hats. Some came donning various head coverings while others chose something from the assortment of hats provided by the center. EDSC board President Lynn Wolsey wore a Mad Hatter costume someone donated for the event.
“We’re really excited about planning it for next year, making it bigger and better,” Cruz said. “It will definitely have a Mad Hatter and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme.”
It will likely be in March, but might be moved from inside the center to outside in Rancho Bernardo Community Park to accommodate more attendees, Cruz said, explaining this year there was room for only a few more guests. She added an outdoor tea party would be appropriate since it is held outside in the story that inspired the fundraiser.
As of press time, the amount raised had yet to be determined, but Cruz said organizers were hoping for a few thousand dollars that will go toward the nonprofit center’s operations.
