Poway Unified receives top Golden Fleece award

Poway Unified School District has the dubious distinction of receiving the Grand Golden Fleece from the San Diego Taxpayers Association. The award was given Thursday night at SDCTA’s 18th Annual Goldens Awards Dinner.

PUSD received the top award for issuing $105 million in capital appreciation bonds that will ultimately cost $1 billion and can’t be refinanced.

The SDTCA recognizes public entities with a Golden Fleece in various categories for ill-advised and irresponsible spending and with Golden Watchdog awards for cost-efficient, smart governing decisions and innovations. Watchdog awards are also given to the media. Additional awards are given for public-private partnerships.

    We're number 1! We're number 1!

What a legacy for the school board. Not "we made the schools better for the kids" or "all our schools are way above 600 API", no, it's "we made decisions that in 20 years will cause retirees to go bankrupt trying to pay their property taxes".

I am surprised that PUSD Board did not retire the trophy!

Every future award will be judged against the PUSD Bond, and found wanting.

Frankly I think the Board and Superintendent should have been made to show up and personally accept the award.
