Prep Swimming: Rancho Bernardo High crowns two champions at league championships
By Michael Bower
Hanging on the wall just outside the Rancho Bernardo High swimming pool is a list of all the school’s record times. Trent Williams, a 2012 graduate of Rancho Bernardo and now a standout at Cal Berkeley, has his name listed next to six of the individual events.
But none of those events are the 100-yard butterfly stroke. And Trent’s younger brother, Tanner, made sure to point that out on Saturday after capturing the Palomar League title in the event at Rancho Bernardo High School.
“I know I have to live in Trent’s shadow, but the good thing is that one of the records he doesn’t hold at the school is the 100 butterfly record,” said Tanner, who finished the butterfly in 52.89-seconds for his first ever Palomar League title. “So, if I can beat the record then I can get my name up there on the board with his … If not this year, maybe next year.”
The school record in the 100 butterfly is held by Ryan Krause, who finished the event in 50.51 in 2008. Williams, who should challenge for the San Diego Section title in the event at next week’s championships, also placed fourth in the 200 individual medlay and was part of the Broncos’ 400-freestyle relay team, which finished second to Mt. Carmel.
Williams wasn’t the only winner from Rancho Bernardo. Freshman Tin Huynh shocked everyone, including himself, by capturing the boys 100 freestyle title. He finished in a personal-best 48.87, just ahead of second-place finisher Tyler Kidd of Mt. Carmel (49.00).
“I wasn’t expecting to win this at all,” he said. “At the last flip turn, something inside of me sparked and I just turned it on the rest of the way. I just feel amazing. That time that I got was unbelievable.”
Liam Semple broke the Palomar League record in the 200 freestyle, but had to settle for second place because Mt. Carmel standout Grant Schenk turned in an even faster performance. Semple came in at 1:42.36, while Schenk finished in 1:42.13
There were no local first-place finishers on the girls side. Rancho Bernardo’s Alyssa Cable finished third in the 100 breaststroke and the Broncos’ 400 freestyle relay team finished in second.
