Driver may have been texting prior to fatal Poway crash

A driver killed in a crash in Poway has been identified as David Doiron, 43, of Lakeside, authorities said. Dorion was the sole occupant of the pickup truck in the June 12 single-vehicle crash. According to a preliminary investigation, Doiron was not wearing a seat belt and may have been sending or receiving text messages at the time of the collision.

A witness observed a Ford F-150 pickup truck driving fast and erratically on Espola Road when it suddenly veered off the right side of the road, said sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Cheever of the Poway Traffic Division. The pickup crashed south of Lake Poway Road and north of Trailwind Road. It was estimated the pickup was traveling approximately 60 mph when it hit the curb prior to the collision, Cheever said. The pickup ran off the road and struck two trees, coming to a rest on the passenger side.

Doiron was trapped in the truck unconscious and still breathing. Fire department personnel administered first aid and were in the process of extracting Doiron from the pickup when he stopped breathing. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Toxicology tests for drugs and/or alcohol are still pending.

No Drugs or Alcohol! He was 13 + years sober! I knew him, a very kind and hard working man! He was my niece's and nephew's uncle on their mother's side. I am so sad about this news! The family is very heart broken about about this! rest in peace David!

Sorry he lost his life. Speed limit on Espola road isn’t 60mph. Wasnt’ wearing seatbelt. Apparently texting whilst driving. No regard for himself or others on the road.

  2. Speeding kills

Witnesses said he was also speeding and weaving in and out of traffic. So unnecessary.

I'm sorry for your loss but you can't say he wasn't speeding because you weren't there. However the witnesses were and I see no reason why they would lie. The truth will come out during the investigation.

  4. very sorry

This is a very sad thing. But it happens often. But its a good thing no one else was hurt.
