ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The Mojalet Dance Collective is opening its home at the Bernardo Winery — The Vine — for a summer concert series that promises to bring new art experiences to the Inland Corridor.

This will be the second year that the collective will host a full schedule of its Summer Sundays@The Vine series, which presents performances from different genres.

The series kick off this Sunday (June 27) with “Forward to Breath,” a show featuring three dance numbers from Terri Shipman, the director of Mt. Carmel High School’s dance program and an instructor at San Diego City College.

“She’s a great professional artist who has danced in New York,” said Faith Jensen-Ismay, Mojalet’s artistic director. “She’s been working with this group of dancers for a couple of years and last year she put on a tremendous show at the Vine, so this is a great way to start off the season.”

The performances will take place at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at The Vine, located at 1330 Paseo Del Verano Norte at the Bernardo Winery. The time was changed this year so that people can enjoy the winery’s live music on Sundays before the shows.

Jensen-Ismay said that with its second full season, the collective wanted to continue its role as a patron of the arts, sponsoring emerging artists by hosting diverse programs.

“We see that we have an important role in the community to host up-and-coming, modern art and to branch out from our traditional role (as a dance company),” Jensen-Ismay said.

The season continues on Saturday, July 3, with comedy featuring Doorkus Malorkus, a group of five performers (this is the only show that will take place on Saturday) who will present a program of comedy, live music and sketch comedy.

The next show will be held July 11, featuring “3 in 1,” that will feature San Diego dance pioneer Betzi Roe as well as Sadie Weinberg and Kim Gregg.

On July 18, the Vine will host the Somebodies Dance Theater, which features husband-and-wife dancers Gina Bolles Sorensen and Kyle Sorensen.

Unlike last year, when the Mojalet Dance Collective did not perform, this season the group will perform twice, on July 25 and Aug. 1.

The first show will feature the company in collaboration with Shoba Sharma, the artistic director of Naatya: Dance Theatre of India, which will present “Bharata Natyam,” which mixes elements of modern dance with India’s ancient myths and poetry. The show will feature the work of guest choreographer Bill DeYoung.

The second Mojalet show, “Percussion, Music and Dance,” features choreography by Jensen-Ismay and Erica Buechner who will collaborate with John Flood, professor of percussion at San Diego State University.

On Aug. 8 the Vine will present the “PGK project,” an evening of dance led by artistic director Peter G. Kalivas, a San Diego-based company that performs locally, nationally and international.

On Aug. 15 the show will be “bkSoul and Collective Purpose,” which blends hip-hop and modern dance.

The season closes on Aug. 22 with “A Collection of Hearts” which will feature an evening of Christian and spiritual music and dance featuring the Soulscape Dance Company, the Good News Dance Company and works by Jensen-Ismay.

Tickets for the shows are $10 and $15. For more information, call 858-243-1402 or visit www.mojalet.com.
