ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Add the names of appointed Poway Mayor Don Higginson and June recall election candidate Dave Grosch to the list of candidates running in November.

City Clerk Linda Troyan said Higginson took out nomination papers last Thursday and that Grosch did the same, to run for City Council, on Monday.

Higginson, a 24-year council member who was the city’s elected mayor between 1992 and 1998, announced his plans to seek a four-year term in March. He was appointed mayor in May 2009 following the death of Mayor Mickey Cafagna.

Higginson has lived in Poway for 45 years and graduated from Poway High School. He is a senior vice president for Mail Boxes, Etc. a subsidiary of UPS.

To date, no one has taken out papers to run against Higginson. Earlier this year Councilwoman Merrilee Boyack said she had changed her mind and would not challenge him.

Grosch retired in 2005 after 13 years with TRW and SAIC, where he did project and fiscal management. He is the head of a citizens’ group opposed to the expansion of the Poway Walmart.

As a recall replacement candidate, Grosch finished fourth out of eight candidates, collecting about 11 percent of the vote.

Appointed City Councilman Carl Kruse took out nomination papers on July 12. He is the only other council candidate to date.

Candidates have until Aug. 5 to return their completed papers.

Voters will select a mayor and two councilmembers. The other council seat is held by John Mullin, who was elected in June to replace recalled Councilwoman Betty Rexford. He plans to seek a full four-year term.

Lousy choices
Sad day for Poway that this is all we have to choose from. I was sad that Boyack chose not to run but understand her reasons. Higginson is a lousy last choice and I won't vote for him. I'm writing in Boyack anyway. Both Higginson and Kruse said they wouldn't take advantage of being appointed. Both are seriously lacking in integrity. Neither get my vote.

Don't be a hypocrite
To everyone who blasted Steve Vaus for changing his mind and running in the election...I hope you're not voting for Higginson and Kraus who both said they weren't going to run and now "changed their minds".
