Learn to square dance

The Wranglers Square Dance Club will open classes Sept. 8 and 15 for first-time dancers who want to learn basic square dance calls and enjoy the many mental and physical benefits of this type of dancing. No experience is necessary, attire is casual, and all ages 11 and up are welcome, families, couples, singles, and groups of friends.
 
Classes will be held 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays at Rolling Hills Elementary School, 15255 Penasquitos Drive in Rancho Penasquitos. The first class is free, classes that follow are $32 per person per eight-week session. Ages 17 and under are half-price.

Y celebrates 10 birthday

The Rancho Family YMCA is inviting the community Saturday, Aug. 28 to celebrate the 10th birthday of the main facility in Rancho Penasquitos, 9410 Fairgrove Lane.
 
The celebration includes a free carnival noon to 3 p.m. featuring a barbecue lunch, bounce house, crafts, games, prizes, class demonstrations, sports challenges, birthday cake and live entertainment by “921.” The day will begin with a scavenger hunt check-in at 10:30 a.m. The celebration will also include recognition of longtime Rancho Family YMCA members, staff and volunteers.

The Y is also offering a reduced joiner fee of $10 for new Family, One-Parent Family and Adult memberships purchased from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, a savings of up to $115. In addition, the fall session of classes will begin the week of Sept. 7.

Learn about local early human behavior
 
Learn about regional prehistoric and early historic human behavior patterns discovered during Sunrise Powerlink environmental studies from archaeologist Arleen Garcia-Herbst 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28 at Los Penasquitos Adobe in the Los Penasquitos Preserve off Black Mountain Road. Meditate, breathe

Wii get crafty

Children and teens ages 6-17 can play Nintendo Wii games and make fun crafts at 4 p.m. every Thursday at the Rancho Penasquitos Library, 13330 Salmon River Road. Volunteer patrol

The Los Penasquitos Volunteer Patrol is looking for new members. Members ride and walk the Los Penasquitos Preserve to assess current conditions, interact with visitors in the manner of a “trail docent” and to provide assistance, first aid and emergency response in coordination with the rangers and local agencies.

Participation requires each volunteer to have and maintain both CPR and first aid training, to complete a course in procedures and radio protocol and to demonstrate a commitment to cheerful interaction as an “ambassador of the preserve.”

Toddler and baby yoga

The Rancho Penasquitos Library, 13330 Salmon River Road, holds Toddler Yoga classes at 10:15 a.m. the third Thursday of the month for walking toddlers 12 to 24 months old. Baby Yoga for babies at least 6 weeks old and not walking is the same day at 9:30 a.m. Bring a yoga mat or towel. Free. No reservations needed. More information at 858-538-8159.


Carmel Mountain Ranch needs you

The Carmel Mountain Ranch Community Council meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Library, 12095 World Trade Drive.

The Carmel Mountain Ranch Residential Community Association meets at 6 p.m. the second Monday of the month at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club, 15050 Carmel Ridge Road.


PQ book club

The Rancho Penasquitos Branch Library’s Literature Book Club meets 6:30 to 8 p.m. every third Wednesday of the month. New members and visitors are always welcome.

The Rancho Penasquitos Library is located at 13330 Salmon River Road. Hours are 12:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Closed on Sunday and Monday. Call 858-538-8159 for more information.


Donate blood

A San Diego Blood Bank donor center is at 12640 Sabre Springs Parkway, in the Sabre Springs Marketplace center.

Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
