The College Baseball Hall of Fame announced Friday that 2009 Rancho Bernardo High graduate and current star pitcher at Arizona State, Trevor Williams, has been named to the Pitcher of the Year Award watch list.

The group consisting of Brendan Santana, Alexander Santana, Austin Nguyen and Ryan Bilhorn — all 12-year-olds — broke their own Junior Olympic 200 free relay record of 1 minute, 44.86 seconds set in 2011 by coming in at a blistering 1:41.34 at the San Diego Imperial Swimming Short Course Junior Olympic Championships Feb. 26 at Rancho Bernardo High School.

It only takes a few minutes from the exchanges of “hello” for Tiffany Joh’s personality to shine through during an interview.

The 2005 Rancho Bernardo High graduate will leave you laughing and hungry by the time the conversation is over.

The second-year LPGA golfer is back in town to compete in the Kia Classic, which begins today at the La Costa Resort and Spa. The event features 144 players competing for a first-place prize of $255,000. But cashing in is not Joh’s only priority while in her hometown.

Poway Polo Club still going strong

They hardly get the attention of the Poway High basketball, soccer or wrestling teams in the winter athletic season. But the Poway Polo Club has been a consistent qualifier to compete at the Interscholastic National Championships for years.

Poway Girls Softball League Opening Day to honor 45th anniversary

The Poway Girls Softball League will be celebrating the start of its 45th year with Opening Day Ceremonies and a Family Fun Fair on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Aubrey Park and Midland Elementary School in Poway.

For the first time in the history of the league, Poway American and Poway National will square off in interleague games at the Majors, Minor A and Minor B level. Due to a combination of reasons — decline in registration and a chance to bring more excitement to the leagues — interleague play will start after spring break and go for two to three weeks.
