Jewish believers prepare for High Holy Days

With the piercing blast of the ram’s horn, Jewish believers will enter into the High Holy Days — a 10-day period beginning with the celebration of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) on Monday, Oct. 3 and ending with the observance of the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement), on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 12 and 13. Synagogues all over this community have announced High Holy Day service schedules and invite those interested to call for details and reservations.


Rabbi Deborah Prinz, Rabbi Tamar Malino and Cantor Lori Frank will conduct High Holy Day services at Temple Adat Shalom, a Reform congregation at 15905 Pomerado Road in Poway. Rosh Hashanah services are at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3; and at 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Yom Kippur services are at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. (Kol Nidre) on Wednesday, Oct. 12; and at 8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:45 p.m. (children’s service) and 3:30 p.m. (Yizkor memorial service) on Thursday, Oct. 13. Ner Tamid Synagogue, a member of the Conservative Jewish movement, invites the community to a special dedication service and dessert reception at 7 p.m. on Saturday in its newly completed synagogue at 15318 Pomerado Road. Immediately following the evening’s dedication festivities, Rabbi Arnold Kopikis will officiate at a Selihot service — a time of humble prayers before God in preparation for the upcoming High Holy Days. The congregation is looking forward to celebrating its first High Holy Day season in the new facility. Rosh Hashanah services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 3; and at 9:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. (youth service) on Tuesday, Oct. 4 and Wednesday, Oct. 5. Rabbi Baruch Lederman will officiate at High Holy Day services at Congregation Kehillas Torah, an Orthodox Jewish congregation in Carmel Mountain Ranch. During the services, Lederman will provide explanations and English translations for rituals and Hebrew prayers. All services will be held at the Doubletree Resort, 14455 Penasquitos Drive. Chabad, an Orthodox congregation in north Poway, is offering free High Holy Day tickets to the unaffiliated in the community and surrounding areas. Chabad extends this invitation to families and individuals from all Jewish backgrounds and levels of religious observance in order to provide an opportunity for them to participate in High Holy Day services they might not otherwise attend.

Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein and Cantor Baumgarten will officiate at all services — conducting them in English and Hebrew and providing explanations throughout the liturgy. The Humanistic Jewish Congregation of San Diego will present a secular celebration of The High Holidays at the Woman’s Club of Carlsbad, 3320 Monroe Ave. The congregation will celebrate Rosh Hashanah with the music of Second Avenue Klezmer and services at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Madrikah Toby Dorfman, Cantor Debrah Davis, San Diego Symphony violinist Joan Zelickman and Dr. Ellen Weller will offer leadership and provide music for a Yom Kippur Kol Nidre service at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Niskor memorial services will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct 13. A break-the-fast buffet will follow. Israeli born singer Zac Hilon will be the special guest at the next luncheon meeting of the Rancho Bernardo chapter of ORT at noon on Wednesday at the Remington Club, 16925 Hierba Drive. Hilon has performed in Las Vegas and around the country. He has also appeared on television and in music videos. His impersonations of Elvis Presley, Neil Diamond, Roy Orbison and The Blues Brothers have brought audiences to their feet. Tickets for this luncheon program are $18. In response to the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, Peñasquitos Lutheran Church will hold a quilting marathon from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday in the congregation’s Fellowship Hall at 14484 Peñasquitos Drive. The church quilting ministry is sponsoring this event to make prayer quilts for victims of this disaster. Readers Theater Group will present “Luther, Then and Now,” a dramatic reading on the life and teaching of Martin Luther, at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at The Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, 16889 Espola Road, Poway. The congregation will serve dinner before the program at 6:30 p.m. A free will offering will be accepted after the drama. Tickets for the dinner are $10. Both Lindquist and associate pastor, the Rev. Mark Cansino, will participate in the reading.
