M. Maxine Cowie

M. Maxine Cowie, age 78, of Rancho Bernardo, California, died the Aug. 17, 2007, following a full and rewarding life as a wife, loving mother and grandparent.

She was born at home on Valentine’s Day in 1929 on a farm in Xenia, Ill., and raised in Pontiac, Ill., one of six children. She married Kenneth Winters in 1948 and became the mother of three daughters.

Pursuing work in the medical field, Mrs. Cowie worked for Drs. Cooper and Brooks in La Mesa.

Mrs. Cowie dearly loved music and sang with the Skyline Wesleyan Church Chorale. The chorale sang with Andre Crouch and at the Billy Graham Crusade. She was a member of the Rancho Bernardo Baptist Church and a member of the Christian Women’s Luncheon. Family, music and her Christian walk played a large part in her life.

Survivors include her husband, Robert J. Cowie of Rancho Bernardo, who she married in 1971; her daughters, Diana K. Rich and Ann K. Starks, both of Illinois, and Karin Winters-Prock of California; five step-children; sister, Marian Allgaier of Illinois; brother, Robert Wilmeth of California; five grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 7 at The Church at Rancho Bernardo, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court. Internment will be Sept. 22 in Graymont, Ill.

Joseph Manzella

Services will be held tomorrow (Friday) for longtime Poway resident Joseph Manzella, who died Aug. 26, 2007 at the age of 90. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., he was a Poway resident since 1960.

Mr. Manzella was a production controller at the North Island Naval Air Station for 20 years. During World War II he served in the Navy. He was a member of the Escondido Elks Club and loved to sing.

Survivors include his son, Joel Manzella of Florida; his daughter Joann Peterson of San Diego; his brothers, Tony Manzella of Florida and George Manzella of San Diego; and five grandchildren.

Services are from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31 at Poway-Bernardo Mortuary, followed by burial at Dearborn Memorial Park at 11 a.m.

Michael Rowan

Michael “Mike” Rowan of Poway died Aug. 19, 2007 at the age of 44. He was born in London, England, and lived in Poway since 1978.

Mr. Rowan was the radiology manager at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista. He was also a musician, and loved playing the guitar and singing. He also enjoyed golf and being with his children

.

Survivors include his children, Emily Rowan and Bradon Rowan, both of San Diego; his parents, Philomena Erickson of Poway and Humphrey Rowan of New London, Conn.; and his brother, Kevin Rowan of Poway.

Services were held Aug. 28 at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Poway-Bernardo Mortuary handled the arrangements.

John Silva Sr.

Former Poway resident John Silva Sr. died Aug. 12, 2007 at the age of 83. Born in Chihuahua, Mexico, his family migrated to El Paso, Texas, when he was 3 months old. They later moved to New Mexico and in 1930 settled in Greeley, Colo. His family migrated using a covered wagon, stopping along the way to work and gather funds and supplies.

He was a member of the Spanish Assembly of God where he played the guitar. Older members referred to him as “John 3:16.”

He married Jesusita Cordova in May of 1943.

Mr. Silva served in the Army from Sept. 1943 to Jan. 1946. During World War II he was a PFC cannoneer, serving in the 738th Artillery in the European Theater. He participated in the Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe campaigns serving 19 months over seas. He re-enlisted in the Air Force from 1949 to 1950.Before retiring in 1981, due to disability, he worked as a concrete finisher.

Mr. Silva enjoyed fishing, watching baseball and going to the zoo.

Survivors include his six children, Tommy Silva and Manuel Silva, both of Poway; Cathy Trujillo and Frank Silva, both of Greeley, Colo., Emma Jean Silva-Maricharlar and granddaughter raised as a daughter, Sue Lynn Lopez; his brothers, Isabel Silva of Greeley and Dave Silva; his sister Manuela “Nellie” Puente of Evans, Colo.; 25 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; four step-great gandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jesusita; his daughter, Jessie Gonzales; his son, John Silva Jr.; his brother, Fernando Silva; and two sisters.

Services were held in Greeley, Colo., and internment is at Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Hilda J. Sippel

Services will be held tomorrow (Friday) for longtime Poway resident Hilda June Sippel, who died Aug. 26, 2007 at the age of 90. Mrs. Sippel was born in Dayton, Ohio, and lived in Poway for 40 years.

A homemaker, Mrs. Sippel served in the Navy WAVES during World War II.

Survivors include her daughters, Rozalyn Helton and Randalyn Hendrickson, both of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Roberta del Castillo of Phoenix, Ariz., Rhonda Sippel of Pauma Valley and Roxanne Hart of San Diego; her sister, Lavena Creech of Dayton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Sippel Jr., who died in 2006; her sister, Eva Marquardt; and her brother, Robert Zinn.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 at California Funeral Alternatives, 1020 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Escondido. Inurnment is at Dearborn Memorial Park in Poway.

The family suggests donations to Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest, Escondido, CA 92025.

Blanch T. Sliger

Blanch T. Sliger of Poway died Aug. 25, 2007 at the age of 78. Born in Minneapolis, Minn., she lived in Poway for six months and was a resident of Huntington Manor.

Mrs. Sliger was an avid painter. She also made jewelry, and loved reading, camping and hiking.

Survivors include her daughters, Joan Helms of Poway, her step-daughter, Joan Pinkert of Portland, Ore; her step-sons, Richard Sliger Jr. of Minneapolis, Minn., and Charles Sliger of Anoka, Minn.; her sister, Marie Ferguson of Albert Lea, Minn.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 3 at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Poway. Inurnment is at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
