Sandra A. Emerson

Sandra Ann Emerson of Poway died Nov. 5, 2007 at the age of 58. She was born in Emery, S.D., and lived in Poway for 13 years.

Mrs. Emerson was a registered occupational therapist. She loved spoiling her children and grandchildren,

Survivors include her husband of 37 years, James (Joe) Emerson; her daughters, Nicole Edmunds of Poway, Katie Guthrie of Hemet and Jamie McDonald of Columbia, Mo.; her mother, Eva Andersson of La Marque, Texas; her sister, Penny Fairchild of Ohio; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Nov. 10 at Pomerado Christian Church in Poway.

C.L. ‘Lew’ Harkleroad

A memorial service will be held Saturday for C.L. “Lew” Harkleroad, who died Nov. 2, 2007 at the age of 87. He was born on May 22, 1920 in Kingsport, Tenn., to Philip Harkleroad and Augusta Taylor Harkleroad.

Mr. Harkleroad joined the United States Marine Corps in September 1941 and trained at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, at Camp Elliot and at Camp Pendleton. During World War II he served in the South Pacific with the famous Carlson’s Raiders. He was honorably discharged in September 1945 at the rank of sergeant.

In 1948 he married the former Marie Dunn, who preceded him in death in 1976.

He came to the San Diego area in 1958 and purchased a home and property in Poway in 1963, which he owned until 2004. He married his current wife, Jewel Baldwin Harkleroad in 1985, and lived in Poway and Yerington, Nev., until his death.

Before retirement, Mr. Harkleroad worked for Sim J. Harris in Kearny Mesa and Nelson-Sloan Redi-Mix in Chula Vista as a heavy equipment mechanic.

Survivors include his wife of 22 years, Jewel; a son, William of Warner Springs, Calif.; a brother, Bert of Yerington, Nev.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 15705 Pomerado Road in Poway.

Michael W. Novitz

Michael W. Novitz of Rancho Bernardo died Nov. 10, 2007 at the age of 77.

Born in Detroit, Mich., Mr. Novitz served in the Army. For 28 years he was the owner/operator of a manufacturing representative agency. Mr. Novitz was a member of Sertoma, City of Hope and Oasis. He also enjoyed photography.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lois; his daughter, Jacqueline Denton of Tucson, Ariz., and his son, Stuart Novitz of San Diego.

Two celebrations of life are scheduled. The first is from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 at Oasis, 280 E. Valley Parkway, in the former Robinson-May Building in North County Fair, Escondido. The second is from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 and Sunday, Nov. 18 at the residence at 17904 Avenida Cordillera in Rancho Bernardo.

The family suggests donations to City of Hope, Rancho Bernardo Chapter, 17419 Plaza Dolores, San Diego, CA 92128; Oasis North County, 280 E. Via Rancho Parkway, Escondido, CA 92029; or Elizabeth Hospice, 150 W. Crest St., Escondido, CA 92025.

California Funeral Alternatives in Escondido handled the arrangements.

Ruth R. Shaut

Ruth R. Shaut of Rancho Bernardo died Nov. 7, 2007 at the age of 88. She was born in Freeport, N.Y., and was a Rancho Bernardo resident since 1981.

Mrs. Shaut was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Stanley; her daughter, Sandra Shaut of Pacific Beach; her son, Christopher Shaut, MD of Louisburg, N.C.; and two granddaughters.

Private services are at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Kathleen M. Sudol

Former Rancho Bernardo resident Kathleen “Kay” Marie Sudol died Nov. 10, 2007 in Sonoma, Calif., less than a month shy of her 83rd birthday. Mrs. Sudol, who had multiple myeloma for the last 10 years of her life, had moved to Sonoma to be cared for by her daughter.

Despite the constant chemotherapy, Mrs. Subol volunteered at the Sonoma Valley Chamber of Commerce and took writing and antique classes. She traveled to Ireland, Turkey and back to the old neighborhoods of New Jersey and Pennsylvania on the East Coast to visit family and friends.

Born in Jersey City, N.J., she was the youngest child of George Patrick Molloy and Madeleine Ruth (Young) Molloy. Mrs. Sudol graduated from Tenafly High School, in 1942 and began her professional career at Harper Brothers Publishing Company in New York City.

Known for her ability to organize and maintain a smooth-running office environment, Mrs. Sudol always had the confidence and trust of her colleagues. The majority of her working years were spent with the San Diego Department of Education as an office administrator and executive assistant to California Schools Leadership Academy (CSLA.)

Survivors include her three children, Bonnie Joy Kaslan of Sonoma; Eugene Sudol Jr. of Marietta, Ga., and Kathleen M. Kaslan of Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Mass is at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16 at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, 601 West Agua Caliente Road, Sonoma, CA 95476.

Inurnment will be at George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, Paramus, N.J., where she will be laid to rest with her mother, father and brother Lawrence.

Duggan’s Mission Chapel and Mission Cremation Service in Sonoma, Calif., handled the arrangements.

Fred R. Wolf

Fred Raymond Wolf died Nov. 8, 2007 at the age of 85. He was born in Indianapolis, Ind., and lived in Rancho Bernardo for 21 years.

Mr. Wolf served in the Army during World War II and was a retired corporate financial executive. He was a member of the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church and chairman of the Bernardo Heights Emergency Preparedness Committee. He enjoyed golf, bridge, travel and reading.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Betty Lou; his sons, Gary Wolf of Nashville, Tenn., and Fred C. Wolf of Fort Meyers, Fla.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Nov. 13 at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church. Dr. Mossid Wases officiated. Inurnment was in the memorial garden at the church.

The family suggests donations to the National Parkinson Foundation, 1501 NW 9th Ave./Bob Hope Road, Miami FL 33136-1494.

Terry A. Straeter

Services will be held Saturday for Terry Anthony Straeter, who died Nov. 6, 2007 at the age of 65.

Born in St. Louis, Mo., Mr. Straeter received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from William Jewel College, graduating magna cum laude, a master’s degree from the College of William and Mary and a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from North Carolina State University.

During his career, Mr. Straeter led his companies in the development of state-of-the-art aerospace and defense systems, starting with his first position after graducation at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va. In 1979 he joined General Dynamics as corporate director of technical software and was president and CEO of Marconi Integrated Systems, Inc. when he retired in 1999. He also served as an adviser to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and on the board of directors of many companies and organizations.

Mr. Straeter was a major supporter of charities, including the United Way, the USO World organization, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and St. Vincent de Paul Village. Retirement found him devoted to his stable of racehorses, as well as an ardent fan of the Chargers and Padres.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Virginia “Jinny”; his daughters, Kelly, Kristen and Ingrid. He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin C. Straeter; his mother, Jane L. Straeter; and his brother, Ted A. Straeter.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church 17010 Pomerado Road, Rancho Bernardo.
