John W. Conley

John W. Conley, a longtime member of the Rancho Bernardo Lions Club, died Aug. 30, 2007 at the age of 98. He was born in East Taunton, Mass., and was an account executive for the J. Walter Thompson Agency. During World War II he was a major in the Army.

After moving to Rancho Bernardo in 1977, Mr. Conley joined the RB Lions Club and began helping the blind by driving them to the San Diego Center for the Blind for their instruction and training. He was instrumental in the club’s procurement of a mini-bus for the San Diego Center for the Blind so clients could be driven by the center’s professional driver.

Mr. Conley was also a longtime chairman of the Sight Committee and major participant in the annual RB Lions White Cane Fund Drive held each October. He received the Melvin Johns award as well as numerous other awards for his many years of service to the club. His last award was a special recognition from the San Diego Center for the Blind for his many contributions to that organization. Since he was no longer able to attend meetings, the award was personally delivered to his residence at the Casa de las Campanas by Kim Gibbens, executive director of San Diego Center for the Blind.

Memorial services were held Sept. 12 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Poway. The family suggests donations to San Diego Center for the Blind, 5922 El Cajon Blvd., San Diego CA 92115.
