Greg Mizel named Del Norte High principal

Poway Unified officials have named Greg Mizel principal of the future $100 million Del Norte High School, expected to be built in 4S Ranch by fall 2009.

Mizel is principal at Mesa Verde Middle School in Rancho Penasquitos, where he assumed responsibilities in 2004 after Sonya Wrisley was selected as principal for the then-proposed Oak Valley Middle School.

Oak Valley, located in 4S Ranch, opened in fall 2005.

During the upcoming year, Mizel will be forming a leadership team to seek input on what the public wants in a high school, matching those “wants” with existing district guidelines, according to Superintendent Don Phillips.

It will be a few months before a new principal is selected for Mesa Verde, said district officials.

Unlike the other comprehensive high schools in the district, the new school is expected to have only freshmen and sophomores, adding a class each year.

Prior to working for Poway Unified, Mizel was principal in the Rancho Santa Fe School district, where he worked in the dual capacity as principal of that district’s upper and middle schools, grades five through eight.

He also served as vice principal, taught English, writing and speech and served as English department chairman in that district from 1992 to 2001.

He has a Master of Science in education with an emphasis in educational leadership from National University, as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Christian Heritage College.
