Sentencing set in shooting death of PHS grad

A recent six-week trial in San Diego Superior Court ended with David Phommachanh, 22, and Konesavanh Donald Sirypangno, 23, both members of the Oriental Killer Boys gang, being found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault with a semi-automatic weapon.

When the jury returned its verdict Oct. 20, they also determined that the crimes were for the benefit of the defendants’ Asian gang, according to Prosecutor Annette Irving, a deputy district attorney.

Irving said both Phommachanh and Sirypangno were among a group of people who crashed the party on Lott Point. Shots were fired in the front yard just after midnight June 11, and Thompson was fatally wounded.

Transported to a La Jolla hospital, he died about 1:30 a.m.

A young woman, Kelly Anderson, shot in the abdomen, survived the attack, but underwent emergency surgery to remove her appendix and repair her intestines, Irving added.

In addition to the two defendants, three other people were charged in connection with the shooting and have since pleaded guilty to lesser charges, voluntary manslaughter and accessory after the fact, she said.

Thompson’s father, John Thompson, said late last week that the guilty verdict was “somewhat a vindication, but will never bring my son back.”

He sat in on most of the trial and plans on being present during the Dec. 17 sentencing of the two who murdered his son, he said.

Tylor Thompson’s parents divorced a few years ago and his mother, Nobuko, still lives in the area.

Cecil and Barbara Thompson of Poway, his grandparents, described their grandson as “a good boy,” someone who was outgoing, creative and had plenty of friends.

His sister Lisa, who now has two children of her own, lives in Rancho Bernardo and is coping with having lost a brother and what will be a fair sentence for Phommachanh and Sirypangno, she said.

She said that a life sentence seemed appropriate for the murder of her brother.

Lisa said the memories of her brother keep her going these days and she can see some of his physical features in her daughter Heaven, now 19 months old.
