Poway grad Alex Dickerson named to college baseball’s Team USA

Poway High grad Alex Dickerson is one of 22 college baseball players who have been chosen to represent Team USA in the Collegiate National Team.

The honor marks another accolade for Dickerson, a soon-to-be junior at Indiana University who was the Big Ten Conference’s hitting leader in batting average, home runs and RBIs his sophomore year.

The team is composed of the top non-draft-eligible players in the country. Dickerson will be a designated hitter and backup first baseman and outfielder.

“I’m just really honored to be where I’m at,” Dickerson said in a phone interview from North Carolina. “Getting to represent your country is not something you get to do often in college baseball and I’m really excited for the opportunity.”

The team was selected after a seven-day tryout period at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

The team will play a five-game series against Korea and then play against a Japanese All-Star team in Omaha on July 21.

They will then travel to Taiwan for a four-game series against Chinese Taipei that starts July 25.

The team closes its summer at the FISU World University Championships in Tokyo which runs July 30 through Aug. 7. Team USA has won the last three versions of the competition in 2004, 2006 and 2008.
