A portion of Scripps Poway Parkway will be named in honor of former Mayor Mickey Cafagna during ceremonies to be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 16 at a new monument sign near the street’s intersection with Pomerado Road.
City and civic leads will join Cafagna family members in unveiling a “Mayor Mickey Cafagna Memorial Parkway” monument sign. A second sign is being built near the road’s intersection with Danielson Street.
Cafagna, 65, died on April 11, 2009 following a battle with cancer. He was appointed to the council in 1992 and was first elected mayor in 1998. His steadfast support of the Poway Business Park, despite uncertain economics at the time, has been widely praised. Construction of Scripps Poway Parkway was a key element to the park’s success.
City Councilman Jim Cunningham headed up the effort to rename the parkway and to raise about $6,000 in private funds to have the two signs constructed.
The City Council has also decided to name a proposed new community center at Community Park after Cafagna.
