Poway Rodeo queen hopefuls are sought

Orientation meetings for the 2013 Poway Rodeo Queen competition are right around the corner.

Two orientation meetings are being held in December at Tierra Bonita Elementary School, 14678 Tierra Bonita Road, Poway in the multi-purpose room. The first meeting is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11 and the second is 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17.

This is the start of the Pro Rodeo Productions of Poway campaign to select a new Rodeo Queen, a Junior Queen and a Young Miss. The Rodeo Queen is for girls between 17 and 23. The Junior Queen is for girls between 13 and 16 and the Young Miss is for girls who will be between 10 and 12 during the time of the pageant.

Entrants must live in San Diego County or Riverside County and must be able to ride a horse in a horsemanship pattern and perform a Queen’s Run. The Rodeo Queen and Junior Queen must also be able to carry flags on horseback. The Young Queen may not ride a horse in the Poway Rodeo

Practices are scheduled to continue weekly at 6:30 p.m. mostly on Tuesdays at either Midland or Twin Peaks elementary schools. Horsemanship practices will be conducted at the Poway Valley Riders Association, 14336 Tierra Bonita Road. There will be additional meetings scheduled to prepare for the pageant. Contestants must be able to ride well and furnish their own horse. Some accommodations may be made.

This year’s pageant will begin with the Horsemanship Competition at the Poway Valley Riders Association grounds at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 2 and is open to the public. The pageant will be held 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 2 in Midland Elementary School’s Multi-Purpose Room.
