Two baby girls were born on Leap Day at Pomerado Hospital in Poway, a birth date their fathers said came as a surprise.
Taylor Brooke Wade, born at 10:12 a.m. on Feb. 29, is the daughter of Katie and Kelly Wade of Escondido. She is their first child and weighed 7 pounds 8 ounces.
“We honestly hoped she wouldn’t be (a Leap Day baby),” Kelly Wade said. “When we got the due date of March 4 we said we hoped she would not be ... because of confusion of having a birthday on that day.
“When she came on the 29th we were surprised, but are now excited and happy,” he added.
Though the family has lived in Escondido for two years, they previously lived in Carmel Mountain Ranch and chose Pomerado Hospital over Palomar Medical Center in Escondido for their daughter’s birth “because we like the area and Pomerado Hospital,” he said. In addition, mom Katie Wade was born at Pomerado.
As for when they will celebrate Taylor’s birthday in non Leap Years, Kelly Ward said they will likely do that on Feb. 28.
Ayla Katzenellenbogen, born weighing 6 pounds 13 ounces at 1:01 p.m. on Feb. 29, is the daughter of Hayden and Tanya Katzenellenbogen. She is their second child, but first daughter. Her brother, Sam, is 3 1/2 years old.
The family has lived in Carmel Mountain Ranch for six years.
Hayden Katzenellenbogen said Ayla was due on March 3 and the couple had a harder time picking her name — which in Hebrew means oak tree — than deciding when to celebrate their daughter’s birthday in non Leap Years.
Instead of choosing Feb. 28 or March 1, he said they will likely have her birthday celebration on the 6th of Adar, which is Ayla’s Hebrew birthday. Since the Hebrew date is determined by the lunar calendar, he said the date will vary, but be roughly around this time of year.
