Poway High School principal Scott Fisher announced his impending retirement today, after 14 years as principal at the high school.

“It’s been a difficult decision for me,” said Fisher. “I love everything about my work.” Fisher said he has been debating retiring for several months.

“Poway High School is in a really good place,” said Fisher. “We’re involved in a lot of good things, we compete well. It’s a good time for me to retire while the school is on top. I feel good about where the school is right now.”

Fisher said that he’s not sure what he plans to do once he retires at the end of the school year. “I’ve given all my thoughts over the years to my family and my job,” said Fisher, saying that being a principal is a 24-7 job, where he has to be on call all the time, as he often ran into students and parents when out in public. “I liked having pressure on me to be successful,” said Fisher. “It’s an ongoing, healthy pressure.”

Fisher, 60, has been in education for 37 years, including 21 years at Poway High School, first as a teacher in 1982, then assistant principal, and became principal in 1999. He also served as principal at Mt. Carmel High School.

The district will post the job listing for the new principal of Poway High School tomorrow, said Fisher, and it will remain open for three to four weeks. “There will be any number of candidates to choose from, both inside the district and out,” said Fisher. “Hopefully, the district will choose someone [to replace Fisher] before the end of the school year.”

Though he’ll no longer be running the show at Poway High School, Fisher, who lives in Poway, said he won’t be withdrawing from supporting the community. “I will happily offer whatever support I can to the district and the community,” said Fisher.
