Time to sign up for Poway summer camps

Summer is right around the corner, and the City is Poway is ready, as early summer camp registration will open 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 16 on the city’s website.

A huge variety of summer camps are being offered this year, ranging in everything from the traditional to the modern. A full listing of camps, times, dates and costs is available for download at the City of Poway website, www.poway.org/Index.aspx?page=338. Camps are open to both residents of Poway, and non-residents.

The Lake Poway Day Camp, for children ages 6 - 12 (or children under 6 who have completed kindergarten) is a week-long day camp, from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., offering swimming, boating, hiking, fishing, arts and crafts and more. Camps are offered on a weekly basis beginning in mid-June, and continuing through mid-August. Cost is $125 per week for Poway residents, $135 for non-residents.

Older kids, ages 13 - 17, can participate in the Counselor in Training (CIT) program, also held weekly at Lake Poway. Teens will assist day camp groups with activities while making friends and learning leadership skills. Cost is $52 per week for Poway residents, $62 for non-residents.

For the younger crowd, More Than Ready Summer Camp is accepting kids ages 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 for week-long camps, 9 a.m. - noon at Community Park. Campers will play games, make crafts, listen to stories and take walking trips to the fire station, the library, and more. All participants must be toilet trained and able to use the bathroom without assistance. Cost is $79 for residents per week, $80 non-residents, and requires a $20 materials fee at the beginning of camp.

For those wanting something beyond the traditional summer camp activities, the City of Poway is offering a wide variety of specialized summer camps, in the fields of film and TV production, science, art, sports and swimming, technology, creative arts (musical theater, singing and dance) and special needs camps.

Registrations are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. You have three ways to register, online, mail-in, and in person. Online registrations accept Mastercard and Visa payments, and a charge of $1.50 will be added to each registration and wait list request.

You can also download and print out a registration form from the City of Poway website to register for summer camps. In addition to Mastercard and Visa payments, mail-in registration also accepts checks. No cash payments are allowed. Mail-in registration should be sent to City of Poway, Community Services Department, P.O. Box 789 Poway, CA 92074-0789.

You can go to the Community Services Department and register in person, 13325 Civic Center Drive. City Hall is open 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday, and 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Friday (closed every other Friday).
