Survival food company moves to Poway

Survival Cave Food just wants to make sure everyone is prepared for an emergency.

The company, which sells survival food, moved in March to Poway from Chesapeake, Va., where it was started in 2009 by company president J.R. Fisher.

“I lived [in Poway] years ago, and I loved the weather,” said Fisher, as to why he moved the company across the country. “We also needed space for our warehouse and production.”

Fisher, a former EMT and member of a rescue squad in Virginia Beach, Va., said he started the company after realizing that “nobody was prepared for anything.”

“People didn’t realize ambulances can get backed up [in an emergency], and that they might need to fend for themselves,” he said.

The company manufactures and sells survival food, with a long shelf life, such as freeze-dried fruits, canned meats and soup mixes. Many of the products have a shelf life of 15 years or longer, and can be purchased separately or in bulk.

Their products can be purchased directly through their website, or through many distributors who carry Survival Cave Food products.

Fisher said Survival Cave Food usually sells large amounts of their product at a time to people trying to protect their families, as well as churches, schools and nonprofits.

“It would be great if everyone in the U.S. had a little bit of prep,” said Fisher. To further this goal, Survival Cave Food started an Indiegogo fund, hoping to raise funds to produce “Survival Food for America,” a plastic pail of survival food that will provide for four adults for three days, which they plan to try and market for under $200. “Imagine if everyone in Katrina had a three-day supply of food,” said Fisher.

Fisher said he wants to get involved with local prepping groups to let them know what kind of survival supplies they’ll need to survive an emergency.

“There’s hurricanes every year, there’s tornadoes every year. If the power goes down, you’ll be standing in line for food with everybody else,” said Fisher. “People should be prepared for an emergency.”
