Michael Canzone combines big firm, community mindset

Need some advice on estate planning, or what to do about your taxes, but don’t want to deal with a big, faceless financial company? Then give Michael Canzone of Ameriprise Financial a call.

Canzone, a longtime San Diego resident who now resides in Rancho Bernardo, is a certified financial planner with Ameriprise Financial, a nationwide firm that lets its employees work independently to best held their clients.

Finance has always been a part of Canzone’s life. “I was the guy who brought the Wall Street Journal to class and hid it in my textbooks,” said Canzone. He began working for a large financial company in Atlanta, after moving there with his then-girlfriend (now wife) while she finished her master’s degree. After moving back to San Diego in 2001, he continued with the company, then after seven years went to another.

After working for two large financial companies for 14 years, Canzone said he left two years ago for Ameriprise Financial in order to have some more freedom in how he handled his clients. “I didn’t like the one-size-fits-all approach [his former company used],” said Canzone. “With Ameriprise, I work under the Ameriprise Financial umbrella, but I can use whatever product is most appropriate for my client.” He was also drawn to the company’s high integrity and Midwestern mentality.

As a certified financial planner, Canzone compared himself to a general practitioner in the medical field. “I know a little bit about all financial aspects,” said Canzone. “If someone needs a specialist, I either refer them to one, or bring one in.” Some of the topics Canzone can assist his clients with include investment advice, estate planning needs, planning for retirement, charitable giving, wealth preservation strategies, cash flow strategies and tax planning strategies.

Canzone also keeps a community mentality when dealing with clients. “I moved to Rancho Bernardo in 2008 (with his family) up from San Diego,” said Canzone. “I had no idea how nice it was [in Rancho Bernardo], how much of a community there is here. I’ve never been part of a community like this until I moved here.”

It’s keeping this community feeling in mind that allows Canzone to provide his clients with the best service. “[Ameriprise Financial] is the power of a big firm, with a community mindset,” said Canzone.
