If you’re planning on abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent but don’t want to cook fish, the Knights of Columbus at San Rafael Catholic Church have a solution.

The Knights’ annual fish fry series is returning this Friday and will continue to be held from 5 to 8 p.m. each Friday through March 22. It will be in the San Rafael Parish Hall, 17252 Bernardo Center Drive, Rancho Bernardo. People can eat at the event or request take-out.

“The food is good and it’s a good opportunity to have food with friends and conversations with those there,” said Adam Dutra, fish fry chairman. “You also help the community since it helps different charities and organizations.”

Proceeds, which Dutra said the Knights hope will be at least $10,000, will benefit parish needs, seminarians, religious vocations and charitable groups the Knights of Columbus support. He said, based on previous years’ attendance, they anticipate at least 400 to 500 to buy tickets for each fish fry.

Tickets will be sold at the door. They can be purchased for an individual night or those who plan to attend five or six can save money by buying a golden ticket, which lets them attend all six dinners for the price of four.

Individual fish fry tickets (dine-in or take-out) are $10 for adults and teens 13 and older, $5 for children ages 4 to 12 and children under 3 are free. A family ticket (two adults plus children) is $25. The golden ticket prices are $40 for adults and teens, $60 for an adult plus one child, and $100 for a family (two adults plus children).

The menu includes batter-fried cod fillets, baked fish, french fries, pasta, creamy coleslaw, mixed green salad, butter and rolls, and for dessert there will be Jello and ice cream sundaes. Dutra said the baked fish and pasta offering will likely change each week since those are chef’s selection.

Besides the meal there will be entertainment for children. Prize drawing tickets must be purchased at the event, but one does not need to be present to win. Each night will have several prizes, such as restaurant gift cards, plus a grand prize that varies. The latter includes a Nook, Kindle Fire, wine night, television, iPad mini and vacation package.
