It took a few days into 2013 for the first Poway baby to be born at Pomerado Hospital.

Lorelei Jessilyn Hose was born at 12:59 p.m. on Jan. 3 to longtime Poway residents April Schiro and Najja Hose. Lorelei was 6 pounds 8 ounces and 18 inches long, her mother said.

A couple babies were born at Pomerado Hospital on New Year’s Day, but their parents are Escondido and Scripps Ranch residents, according to Leonel Sanchez, Palomar Health’s spokesman.

Because her daughter was born three days into the new year, Schiro said “it shocked me” to learn Lorelei was Poway’s New Year baby.

As for the first name, Lorelei was a name the parents just liked, Schiro said, while the middle name, Jessilyn, is the German version of Lorelei’s godmother’s name — Jessie Lynn.

Welcoming the baby home are Hose’s 6-year-old daughter, Angela; paternal grandparents Shirley and Solomon Hose of Poway, and maternal grandparents Janine Schiro of Poway and Allan Schiro of San Carlos.

The City of Poway typically presents a gift to the parents of the first Poway resident born in the new year. The presentation is made at a City Council meeting. City spokesman Eric Heidemann said this year it will be a $200 Costco gift card.
