POWAY (CNS) - An investigation was under way Friday into a five-vehicle pile-up that killed a Poway motorcyclist on the Inland Corridor stretch of Interstate 15.

Daniel Shea, 24, of Poway, died in the crash on north Interstate 15 at Ted Williams Parkway about 10:15 p.m. Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol and the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.

In the moments leading up to the crash, Shea and a second motorcyclist were headed north — each at high rates of speed, passing other vehicles — when Shea crashed into the back of a 2003 Chevy Suburban driven by a 54-year-old Valley Center man and traveling about 60 mph ahead of the motorcyclists, CHP Officer Tommy Doerr said.

Shea was thrown from his 2003 Honda motorcycle upon impact and narrowly missed by a 22-year-old woman driving a 2010 Ford Fusion behind the motorcyclists, Doerr said.

The Ford slowed to miss Shea and was hit from behind by a 22-year-old Bonsall man driving a 2005 Toyota 4Runner. The 4Runner overturned after its collision with the Ford and landed on its side in a neighboring lane, striking the back of a 2004 Honda Civic driven by a 34-year-old man in the process, Doerr said.

The other motorcyclist continued on, according to Doerr.

Medics took Shea to Pomerado Hospital, where he died at 11:07 p.m., according to the Medical Examiner’s office.

No other injuries were reported.
