Enforce the laws we have

In response to Carol Gendel (Letters, June 6): Blaming the gun is like blaming a glass for getting you drunk or the car because you hit someone. I don’t know which studies you are reading, but suicide is 85 percent higher by hanging, strangulation or suffocation. We need more laws? We now have 271 federal laws and California has 541. How about we enforce the ones we have?

As far as women’s health care, obviously you are referring only to Planned Parenthood. There are many Christian women’s health centers. There, children are a gift from God and are treated as such. No one can seem to answer the one simple question of; when a child is not wanted, it’s a blob of tissue, but when they are wanted, they are a baby, how does that work?

Out-of-control spending is the problem. I will give you that major corporations should not be bailed out, nor should we be spending money on things like the sexual habit of the hummingbird.

You mentioned Michigan, but failed to mention that the cities they are bailing out, like Detroit are run by Democrats and the unions.

At this point, it’s not the GOP or the Dems, but the overreaching power of government as a whole. We have people who have been in government way too long and have lost touch with what it’s really like to earn a real living. Term limits would be a great start.

What’s with the bananas?

Every day, on the lovely green swath along Acena Drive outside The Remington’s wall, there appear several partially eaten bananas with their peels. And these stay there for days and weeks, rotting and blackening and no doubt attracting unwanted “visitors.”

I have witnessed this going on for months and even years. Occasionally I pick up the bananas and put them into my “doggie bag.” But I get tired of cleaning up someone else’s mess.

My frustration grows into anger and then more frustration about what to do to stop this desecration of our really beautiful Rancho Bernardo. I’ve thought about rigging video cameras to catch the perpetrator(s). I’ve thought about placing signs along the wall, but that assumes the “perp” can read. I’ve thought about sitting out there all day and night to see who is throwing their garbage onto the grass. None of these ideas seems realistic.

Has anyone out there noticed this problem? Has anyone out there got a good and realistic idea about how to stop this problem?

Goodbye to customers, friends

This is a fond farewell letter to my friends, guests, co-workers and boss of the Chicken Pie Diner. Next month I am packing my bags and leaving my life here after 22 wonderful years.

What wonderful memories you all have given me. I have been blessed watching babies come in car seats and later leave for college, making sure to stop by before they go. Some would come in on prom night just to show me their dress.

I’ve been blessed to meet many wonderful couples over the years. I watched them (and myself) grow older. Then there’s the day one comes in without the other and we would hug and cry and share special memories. I’ve also been able to watch two of my three children work at the restaurant.

My last day at the Chicken Pie Diner will be Thursday, July 25. Please come by and say goodbye.
