Barons Market offers value, selection

This family-owned market is specializing in giving their customers great products for a low price. Barons Market, which has four locations in Southern California, including Rancho Bernardo, offers locally sourced produce, natural and organic products, and specialty items that are hard to find elsewhere.

The first Barons Market was opened by Joe Shemirani in Point Loma in 1992, and is still run by the Shemirani family. “We all grew up here, in Rancho Bernardo and Poway,” said Rachel Shemirani, marketing manager for Barons Market.

In addition to locally sourced produce, Barons Market also seeks out the best of natural and organic products to offer their customers. Every Thursday, their managers and supervisors come together for three hours to taste-test potential new products for the store. During the tasting, they rate the products on taste, the ingredients, and at what cost Barons Market will be able to sell the product, for the best value for their customers. “Value doesn’t go out of style,” said Shemirani, who said the store is so dedicated to value that they sometimes reject great products for costing too much. “We’ve had to deny amazing products because no one is going to pay $9.99 for a jar of pasta sauce. Eating healthy should not cost an arm and a leg.” Shemirani said that 96 percent of Barons Market’s products are natural or organic, and the company is working to make that percentage closer to 100.

Barons Market also has a dedicated gluten-free section, where their wide variety of gluten-free products are gathered together for easy browsing. They also have all frozen gluten-free products in one freezer for further convenience. Last year, Barons Market invited 10 customers from their Facebook who eat a gluten-free diet, to taste-test 120 gluten-free products. “They tasted and evaluated everything,” said Shemirani, “and helped us decide on the items [the store would sell] and prices.” Shemarani said the store plans to offer the gluten-free taste-testing again sometime this year.

Barons Market is also dedicated to offering products that are hard-to-find, such as their wide variety of craft beers. “We are the go-to place in Rancho Bernardo for beer,” said Shemirani. In addition to selling local beer, Barons Market also stocks a lot of hard-to-find beers, such as Brew Dog Tokio Imperial Stout, Black Diamond Whiskey Barrel Aged Imperial Porter and Knee Deep Simtra Triple IPA. “We’re constantly getting new beers in everyday,” said Shemirani.

Not a beer drinker? Then maybe Barons Market’s selection of specialty sodas is more up your alley. The market offers a variety of “craft sodas,” including some classic sodas and ginger beers. “There’s a new kind of throwback to older sodas and sodas that use older ingredients,” said Shemirani.

Barons Market is located at 11828 Rancho Bernardo Road, Rancho Bernardo, and also has locations in Point Loma, Temecula and Wildomar/Murrieta, and is open 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily. For more information, call 858-485-8686.
