One way to treat mom, grandma and the other mother figures in your life is by taking them to Bernardo Winery this weekend.

web BernardoWinerySignGlassesThe winery is holding its 36th annual spring arts and crafts fair that per tradition occurs each Mother’s Day weekend.

The fair will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12 on the winery grounds, 13330 Paseo del Verano Norte, Rancho Bernardo. Admission, parking and shuttle service are free.

The family-friendly event will have something that appeals to all ages and genders, said Sam Pewitt, the winery’s marketing manager.

With around 5,000 attendees over the two days, Pewitt said there is typically higher attendance at this fair than the fall one, partially due to the weather.

“It’s practically guaranteed to have good weather and people like to bring mom out for the weekend to shop for arts and crafts and drink a glass of wine,” she said.

Around 135 vendors are expected, many of whom are returnees who in most cases will be in their same spots as last year, Pewitt said. Among their offerings will be soaps, jewelry, artwork, handmade clothing, pottery, signs, birdhouses, toys and woodworking items, the latter likely to be of interest to men. All the items are handmade and since it is a “juried” fair, there is minimal overlap in vendor offerings.

Kids will be entertained by a clown who will make balloon animals and paint their faces on a donation basis.

There will be musical entertainment in two locales and many types of food available for purchase. This will include Mexican, Greek, handmade crepes and the Super Q food truck.

Due to the anticipated crowd, Pewitt said wine tasting will be offered in two places — the winery’s Tasting Room and its Barrel Room. Offerings will include various vintages such as the 2010 Sangiovese and 2011 Estate Petite Syrah. Both are being released that weekend for purchase by the glass or bottle. Also available will be homemade Sangria, which is a family recipe.
