The Poway Veterans Park Committee and VFW Post 7907 are jointly hosting a Veterans Day ceremony, to be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11 at the Poway Veterans Park, 14135 Midland Road.

Also assisting in the ceremony will be Poway’s American Legion Post 479 and the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 70.

This year’s guest of honor will be Col. John P. Farnam, commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Medals (with combat “V”) and the Strike Flight Award with Numeral 7.

The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. with VFW Commander David Shiflet making opening remarks. Boy Scout Troop 622 will raise the colors, and the pledge of allegiance will be said.

After the pledge, Farnam will speak, followed by a speech from American Legion Post 479 Commander Chuck Cross. The Fleet Reserve Association will follow with a bell ceremony.

The Boy Scouts will retire the colors, and Poway Veterans Park’s cannon will be fired twice in a salute at 11:30 a.m. Traffic on Midland Road will be briefly stopped for safety reasons.

Following the ceremony, the public is invited to a free barbecue lunch at the VFW Post 7907, 12342 Old Pomerado Road, to continue the celebration of our nation’s veterans and their service. “The best way to honor veterans is with your presence,” said Don Stonecipher of the VFW.

For more information on the ceremony or the following lunch, call VFW Chaplain Joe Vaineharrison at 858-748-7907.
