Second SoCal Mud Run is Sunday in Rancho Bernardo

Those who missed the SoCal Mud Run in the spring or who had so much fun they want to do it again have another opportunity this weekend.

A new route with additional challenges that include a wall to climb in Lake Hodges await participants on Sunday, Oct. 20, said run director Dennis Yeatman. The 5K event will start near the gazebo in Rancho Bernardo Community Park, 18448 W. Bernardo Drive, and continue on the trails throughout San Dieguito River Park that includes Lake Hodges. The run benefits Poway, Rancho Bernardo and Del Norte high schools and the Travis Manion Foundation, that assists veterans, current service members and their families.

Those affiliated with Poway and Del Norte high schools will start at 9 a.m. and those with Rancho Bernardo High ties at 10:30 a.m. Those not running for one of the three campuses, but for the Travis Manion Foundation can pick either time.

Proceeds will be divided between all four groups, Yeatman said. When held last April, $7,000 was divided among the foundation plus Del Norte and Rancho Bernardo high schools.

Yeatman said the event is returning in six months instead of a year because school officials asked him to organize another Mud Run on their campuses’ behalf. Depending on response, Yeatman said he will decide if future Mud Runs are held once or twice a year.

As of Monday there were 100 registered, but Yeatman said he expects that to pick up as the event nears. In April there were 280 participants plus many relatives and friends who came to cheer for them.

“The response to the first run was terrific,” he said.

Registration fees are $20 for youths (12 and under with a participating adult) and students (ages 13 to 18), $45 for adults and $40 for active duty military. Yeatman said Pomerado Newspaper readers can have a 10 percent discount by including the promo code “mudrun10” when registering online at

.

Registrations will also be accepted at the event.

“There is a different course, with more water, more mud and hopefully more fun,” Yeatman said.

Among challenges are the slip and slide, over and unders, Titanic Plunge, Michelin Mountain, tunnel crawl, Lake Hodges bell ringer, Nile Mile, D-Day beach invasion, Haystack Hill and Muddy Sunday Pit. Participants can choose to walk instead of run the distance — equal to 3.1 miles — and go around the obstacles. They do not need to know how to swim for the lake portion.

Since participants will get covered in mud they are advised to wear old sneakers and clothes that they are willing to throw away. They can also wear costumes. There will be a secure place to store keys, cell phones and money if placed in a sealable bag that along with a change of clothes, shoes and towel are placed in a backpack or plastic grocery bag.
