You’ve heard of sweets for the sweet, but what about suites for the sweet?

The Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (YPO) Soloists Ensemble, under the artistic direction and conducting of Alyze Dreiling, will be performing a concert, “Musical Treats and Valentine Suites,” 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14 at Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church, 17010 Pomerado Road.

The concert will feature six pieces, including two suites, Suite No. 2 by Johann Sebastian Bach and Suite for Strings by Arthur Foote. “It worked really well for a Valentine’s Day concert,” said Dreiling. “Foote is a complex work that isn’t heard often.”

The Soloists Ensemble is made of up 23 talented strings players ranging in ages from high school to 25 and will include five soloists.

Up first at the concert is Bach’s Suite No. 2, with a solo performance by flautist Jonathan Sussman. Second will be Violin Concerto No. 2 by Spohr, with a solo performance from violinist Ethan Hsu. Third is Andante and Rondo for Contrabass by Dragonetti, with a solo performance by contrabassist Marc Olsher.

The fourth piece performed will be Cello Concerto by Boccherini, with a solo performance by cellist Taylor Cottle. Fifth will be “Zigeunerweisen” by Sasarate, with a solo performance by violinist Lauren Kim.

Foote’s Suite for Strings will be the final piece performed, as an ensemble.

“The goal [of the Soloists Ensemble] is to feature each musician in a solo, if they wish,” said Dreiling. “We ask them what they’d like to play.” Dreiling also said they try to “mix [chosen pieces] up,” to make the concerts interesting for the audience. “These pieces seem to work well together.”

The Youth Philharmonic Orchestra has recently expanded to include a percussion ensemble, under the musical direction of Heather Barclay, which is collaborating with Palomar College. The Soloists Ensemble will be collaborating with the percussion ensemble in May. “We’re really excited about the new ensemble,” said Dreiling.

The next YPO Soloists Ensemble concert will be on Friday, May 30. It will be a collaboration with the San Diego Master Chorale for a performance of Ola Gjeilo’s “Sunrise Mass.”

Tickets for “Musical Treats and Valentine Suites” are $10 for adults, $8 students, and are available online at ypofeb14.eventbrite.com. Tickets will also be available at the door.
