Prep Boys Basketball: Poway High falls to Torrey Pines

Share

By Michael Bower

Sam Worman and the Torrey Pines High boys basketball team showed it still has Poway’s number.

The 6-foot, 5-inch senior forward scored 21 of his game-high 27 points in the second half, as the Falcons ran away from the host Titans for a 65-50 Palomar League victory Tuesday night in a battle between unbeaten teams.

The loss snapped the four-game winning streak of Poway (12-9, 2-1 Palomar League) and gave the Falcons (18-4, 3-0) their fourth win in their last five games. It also deals a small blow to the Titans’ run at their first league crown since 1998. Poway has not beaten Torrey Pines since 2012.

Poway never led in this one, but kept it close through the first two quarters. Worman and the Falcons started to pull away in the third quarter and then blew the game open early in the fourth. Worman scored Torrey Pines’ first 10 points of the fourth quarter, stretching the Falcons’ lead to 54-37.

Poway was led by Dalton Soffer’s 15 points. Tom Erb and Tyler Green each chipped in with 12 for the Titans, which will travel to rival Rancho Bernardo Friday for a 7 p.m. showdown.
