Seniors at Del Norte and Rancho Bernardo high schools will be among thousands in the Poway Unified School District receiving their diplomas today (Thursday).

At Del Norte, there will be around 385 Nighthawks walking across the stage during their 3 p.m. ceremony in the school’s stadium. They will be led by class Valedictorian Christina Cheng and Salutatorian Rosa Chung.

Giving the commencement speech will be senior Barry Yang, whose speech was selected during a contest in April. The seniors in Del Norte’s choir will serenade their fellow graduates with “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedinfield, said ASB Adviser Allison Basehore. She added that Cheng will also lead the graduates in turning their tassels.

The graduates will return to campus at 9:30 p.m. Thursday so they can be taken by bus to their “Continuing to Soar” Grad Nite party, being held at the MCAS Miramar Officer’s Club. They will return at 5:30 a.m. Friday.

Before going off into different directions, Del Norte’s Class of 2014 participated in some special activities earlier this week. On Tuesday, they held their senior picnic in Rancho Bernardo Community Park. On Wednesday, they gathered at the Hamburger Factory in Poway for a senior breakfast.

For the first time in 17 years, Rancho Bernardo High will again hold its graduation ceremony in its school stadium, said Cindy Long, one of the ceremony’s coordinators. For years it was held at San Diego State University, but with a smaller class there should not be a problem with holding it in the smaller venue, she said.

“It promises to be spectacular,” Long added.

To ease the parking crunch for guests coming to see the 565 Broncos walking across the stage during their 5:30 p.m. ceremony, school officials are having buses shuttle people from two local churches, which offered their parking lots for the graduation, Long said.

Those attending RB High’s graduation are asked to park at the Church of Latter Day Saints, 15750 Bernardo Heights Parkway, or Hope United Methodist Church, 16550 Bernardo Heights Parkway. The free shuttle service will transport guests to the ceremony from 3:30 to 5:15 p.m. After the ceremony, it will transport guests back to the parking lots until 8 p.m.

During the ceremony class Valedictorian Nathan Ng will give the commencement speech. Also recognized will be Salutatorian Sathya Ramesh. Several seniors will also perform musical pieces.

The pre-ceremony music will be “My Wish” sung by Morgan Parpart, the theme song from “Arthur” sung by Lizzie Trumbore; and “A Moment Like This” sung by Emily Weinberg. During the ceremony “Crazy Dreams” will be sung by Samantha Belgum and “Whenever You Remember” will be sung by Samantha Geier.

The graduates will return to campus at 9:30 p.m. Thursday so they can be taken by bus to their “Reaching Beyond” Grad Nite party, being held at K1 Speed in Carlsbad. They will return at 5 a.m. Friday.

Among their final class activities as Broncos, members of the Class of 2014 attended the senior picnic on Tuesday at Lake Poway and the senior breakfast on Wednesday in the RB High stadium.
