The Poway-Scripps Rotary will be getting a familiar face as its new president July 1.

Bill Stoudenmire, who previously served as the club’s president in 2010-11, will be returning for 2014-15.

He will be taking over for the current president, Dan Brenner. Pauline Getz was originally going to serve as president this year, but will focus on her role as parade chair for the Poway Days Parade. Stoudenmire said he volunteered to act as president for this year.

Stoudenmire said his short-term goal for his term as president is to increase club membership by at least five members. “We’ve lost a few members,” said Stoudenmire. “Lunch is tough for business people.” Originally known as Poway Rotary, the club expanded to include Scripps Ranch last year and changed its name to reflect its new area of coverage.

The Poway-Scripps Rotary also stepped up last year to take over the Poway Days Parade, which was in danger of being cancelled due to a lack of leadership. Rotarian Pauline Getz served as the parade chair last year, and reprises the role again this year. “For our first quarter, the major focus will be the 50th annual Poway Days Parade,” said Stoudenmire.

Stoudenmire said he also plans to try and increase the Poway-Scripps Rotary’s visibility in the community, and keep up with the Rotary’s projects and scholarships. “I want to make sure the community knows about the work we do,” said Stoudenmire.

Stoudenmire is also planning on trying to give two high school juniors the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) this year, which will send them to a two-and-a-half day camp in Idyllwild.

He is also planning on making sure the group’s lunch-time meeting speakers and programs remain top-notch. “I want to keep our programs compelling and good,” said Stoudenmire.

This past year, the Poway-Scripps Rotary did not hold its traditional Poway Spirit Day, which has Rotarians and volunteers working around town to improve Poway — because there were already so many helpful groups and programs in place. “With [ city counsel member] Steve Vaus’ program, and Helping Hands [community day of service], and the city’s call-in phone number, we decided we weren’t needed this year. We focused on Rotarians at Work day.”

On the group’s Rotarians at Work day, Rotarians performed maintenance on a trail behind City Hall in March.

Stoudenmire has been a member of the Poway-Scripps Rotary since 2007. He spent 40 years in the radio broadcasting business, working in San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, Kansas City and Des Moines. He first came to San Diego in 1986, working for Noble Broadcasting Group.

He now works for Penn Mutual Insurance as a financial advisor, and lives in Poway with his family.

The Poway-Scripps Rotary meets at noon on Wednesdays at the Brigantine restaurant at the corner of Poway and Community Roads. For more information on the club, visit tinyurl.com/powayscrippsrotary.
