A doctor in Rancho Penasquitos is being honored as a local hero.

Union Bank and KPBS have named Dr. Allen W. Chan, doctor of chiropractic medicine at Chan Chiropractic, as one of two local hero honorees for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Chan, who is also the founder and owner of Jasmine Seafood Restaurant in Kearny Mesa, will be recognized later this month at a private dinner celebration with his family and executives from KPBS and Union Bank.

The other honoree is Dr. M.C. Madhavan, a professor emeritus of economics and Asian studies at San Diego State University.

“(The Local Heroes program) pays tribute to exemplary leaders who are making a difference and enriching the lives of others by improving their community, region and the world at large,” a press release from Union Bank and KPBS stated. “The 2014 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month honorees demonstrate a shared commitment to providing their communities with the tools to thrive in today’s changing world.”

According to the release, Chan was the 2011 charter president for the San Diego United Lions Club and was the co-convener of the Asian Pacific American Coalition, uniting Asian and Pacific Americans for fair redistricting.

Chan also is in charge of census outreach for the U.S. Census Bureau and the organization of Complete Count Committees for the Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Laotian and Cambodian communities in San Diego.

Chan received his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Utah and his doctorate in chiropractic medicine from the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, according to the release.
