Prep Baseball: Finley sharp in Broncos’ rout

Drew Finley put on a performance that was sure to impress the dozen-plus scouts at Rancho Bernardo High on Thursday afternoon.

The 6-foot, 3-inch, 205-pound right-hander had one of his more efficient outings, throwing first-pitch strikes to 17 of the 23 batters he faced in the Broncos’ 10-0 victory over Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland.

Finley, who is expected to be a high draft pick in June, struck out six and allowed just three hits over six innings of work to pick up his fourth win of the season. The senior’s earned run average lowers from 1.05 to 0.80 after the stellar performance in a consolation game of the Lions Tournament.

“I have a lot of confidence in my stuff,” said Finley, who threw 58 of 78 pitches for strikes. “Getting ahead in the count is a big advantage. I like to get ahead and then let my defense go to work.”

It did. And so did the offense.

The Broncos did some work on their own -- including a grand slam by Calvin Mitchell to deep right field in the fifth -- but were also helped by the wild pitching of the Dragons.

The Broncos reached base six times on hit by pitches -- Connor Shadroo was pegged on three of those -- and six more times on walks. Every hitter in Rancho Bernardo’s lineup except one reached base safely at least once.

Lenard Jones knocked in a pair of runs with a two-out double in the first inning. Alika Williams went 1-for-2 with an RBI and Evan Roehrig had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Broncos (10-2).

But the highlight of the day clearly belonged to Mitchell. The 6-foot, 190-pound, left-handed sophomore pounded an offering over the right-field wall with the bases jammed in the fifth. It was his second home run of the season.

Rancho Bernardo will face La Costa Canyon on Monday in a matchup between two of the top teams in the San Diego Section. The Broncos then have Ramona Wednesday before opening up Palomar League play against Torrey Pines April 14.
