Editorial: Thumbs up to Poway Chamber of Commerce

THUMBS UP to the Poway Chamber of Commerce for deciding to partner with Abraxas High School in a program intended to improve the school’s image in the community. Abraxas, a continuation high school, serves the educational needs of students who, for one reason or another, don’t fit into the traditional high school mold. School officials know the value of the services provided at the school and reached out to the chamber to find ways to change the perception held by some in the community, that only “bad kids” go there. As its first step in the partnership, the chamber allocated some of the money raised at a recent golf event to the school.

THUMBS UP and congratulations to the two hard-working volunteers who have been designated as the 2015 inductees into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame: Nancy Canfield and Shirley Black. Canfield was selected for her leadership with the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society while Black, a Poway resident, is being recognized for her years of service with the Rancho Bernardo High School Friends of the Library. They will inducted at a private dinner on May 9.

THUMBS UP to news last week that a planned for-sale housing project for qualified veterans in Poway is proceeding as planned. The 26 townhomes on Twin Peaks Road, near the Circle K store, will be financed and built by San Diego Habitat for Humanity without construction funding from the California Department of Veterans Affairs. Habitat for Humanity will provide the $6 million and the project management needed. Construction is expected to start this summer, pending City Council approval. The work will be done by volunteers and the veterans who will be purchasing their homes.

THUMBS UP to the Poway Unified School District Teachers of the Year: Dena Glynn of Tierra Bonita Elementary School in Poway, Paul Messerle of Rancho Bernardo High School and Courtney Jennings of Shoal Creek Elementary School in Carmel Mountain Ranch.

THUMBS UP to the 46 percent of the 1,940-member Del Norte High School student body who were named to the honor roll for the second trimester. Nine hundred students were recognized. Of that number, 660 achieved a grade point average of at least 4.0. Very impressive.
