‘Chalk It Up’ contest returning to Rancho Bernardo park

Share

Locals of all ages are sought to express their creative talents during Rancho Bernardo’s fifth annual Chalk It Up sidewalk chalk art contest.

The free event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 2 in Rancho Bernardo Community Park, 18448 W. Bernardo Drive, with organizers promising a “bigger and better (event) than the first four years.”

While the registration deadline is Monday, April 27 — obtain the form at www.RBCommunityCouncil.com — artists will want to submit their form as soon as possible since the first 200 who pre-register and participate can receive a free commemorative T-shirt. The shirts will feature artwork from the previous chalk art contests plus event sponsor logos. Chalk It Up is organized by the Rancho Bernardo Community Council.

The artists will be provided a bucket of chalk to use on their section of sidewalk, which winds through the park. They have as long as necessary to create their artwork prior to the judging that will occur near the event’s conclusion.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three finalists in five age categories — elementary, middle school, high school, adult and senior citizen. There will also be an overall winner selected. The prizes are gift certificates donated by area businesses and range in value from $15 to $300.

All participants will receive a coupon for free food at Chick-fil-A in Carmel Mountain Ranch plus a coupon to Golden Spoon Frozen Yogurt. There will also be free refreshments, including coffee, bottled water and cookies.
