Spanish guitar fans will get to enjoy two generations of the Maldonado family performing at two shows on Sunday at the Vine Theater at the Bernardo Winery.

Rancho Penasquitos resident and Spanish guitarist David Maldonado will be performing two shows at 2 and 4 p.m. on Sunday as part of the Mojalet Dance Collective’s Cultural Series at the Vine.

Tickets are $16 general admission, $11 students, senior and military. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.mojalet.com/12webtix.html.

The show “Noche de Pasion,” will explore 100 years of Spanish guitar music in a single evening, from modern music to the roots of Spanish guitar in Morocco and Egypt.

He will perform original Spanish compositions and re-worked pieces dating back to the early 1900s by legendary composers Geronimo Jimenez and Sabicas, godfather of flamenco. Maldonado will also be performing traditional Spanish folk songs. “It’s focusing on the history of Spanish guitar,” said Maldonado, who has previously toured with “Noche de Pasion” before taking a break to spend some time with his children. “I’m a single dad,” he said. “I took a break but now I’m starting back up performing.”

Maldonado will be joined by professional flamenco dancers and a belly dancer while exploring Spanish guitar music. For the first time in a professional setting, two of these dancers will be very special — Maldonado’s children.

Angel, 10, and Selina, 8 are both students at Los Penasquitos Elementary School in the Poway Unified School District and talented flamenco dancers. They will be dancing during Maldonado’s performance of the Spanish traditional folk songs.

“It’s the first time they’ve performed with me like this,” said Maldonado. “They’ve done some auditions with me, but this is the first time at an event where there are tickets. It’ll be really fun, I’m very excited.”

Maldonado is a former Rancho Bernardo resident who moved to Rancho Penasquitos to get his children into Los Penasquitos Elementary School, he said.

“It’s nice to perform together,” said Maldonado, “but as their dad, I’m always wrong. I can’t teach them anything.”

Maldonado said his children are very excited to perform with him at the Vine Theater. “They’ve watched me tour and always asked me lots of questions about performing,” he said. “They’re excited that now they’ll be a part of the show.”

Maldonado said he’s also looking forward to performing in Rancho Bernardo, where he used to live. “My neighbors were always asking where I played,” he said. “Now, many of them are coming to the show (in Rancho Bernardo).”
