Prep Baseball: Titans beat Westview to remain in first place

Poway High senior Tyler Nevin has watched his younger teammates grow up in a hurry. And now his Titans are in a battle for the Palomar League title for the first time since winning it all in 2010.

Nevin went 2-for-3 with a double and sophomore Blake Wagenseller homered, as Poway (12-9, 5-2) defeated Westview 4-2 Thursday to remain in first place in the Palomar League.

The Wolverines fall a game behind after the loss, their third in league play. Torrey Pines entered today’s game with Mt. Carmel with one loss in league and the four-time defending champion Broncos are in the hunt with three losses.

“A lot of people didn’t expect us to be in this spot because we are so young,” said Nevin, who made a nice stop on a shot down the line at third base for the final out of the game. “I admit that in the beginning of the season our youth showed. We were a little out of our element. But now we are in our element and I feel like it is all coming together.”

The young pitching staff is a big reason why. Sohomore Dylan Weese turned in another solid performance, this time coming out of the bullpen to hold the Wolverines to just two runs over three innings of work.

“They have done a great job,” Nevin said of the staff. “They have kept us in just about every game. We have never been down by a lot at any point of the season.”

Junior Kevin Bristow had a double and two RBIs. Jeff Pellegrino went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Wagenseller finished with a pair of hits an RBI and two runs.
