Prep Football: Poway native Martell commits to Texas A&M

Share

Poway native Tate Martell surprised some by choosing to commit to Texas A&M University rather than USC on Thursday night. He announced the decision on his Twitter account.

Martell, one of the nation’s top quarterback recruits, picked Texas A&M after narrowing his choices down to the Aggies, USC, Alabama, Washington and Michigan.

The former Poway High quarterback transferred to Las Vegas, Nevada powerhouse Bishop Gorman before the start of his sophomore year last season. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound signal caller led the Gaels to their sixth straight state championship and a mythical national title. He threw for 2,537 yards and 40 touchdowns to just two interceptions.

Rivals.com rates the junior pre-season All-American 18th nationally at his position in the Class of 2017.

Martell committed to Washington at the age of 14, but decommitted after putting together a stellar sophomore season.
