Target to open Oct. 7 just west of Rancho Bernardo, 4S Ranch

The new Target store coming to Del Sur is on track to open this fall, while the arrival of Phil’s BBQ in Rancho Bernardo has been pushed back to next spring.

Target is the first store that will open in the new Del Sur Town Center, just a few miles west of Rancho Bernardo and 4S Ranch. Company spokeswoman Erika Winkels said it is on track to open on Oct. 7 and it recently held a job fair. Prospective employees can apply online at Target.com/careers.

The 140,000-square-foot Target will be the first store to open in the new Del Sur Town Center, located on Camino del Sur and Del Sur Ridge Road between Zaslavsky and Garretson streets, said James Williams, vice president of marketing and communications for Shea Properties, which is developing the 18-acre center.

Williams said it has a total of 210,000 square feet available for retail, and there is 70,000 square feet remaining of inline and pad space after the Target project.

“Mainly it will be restaurants with patio space and services, a good mix of professional services and dining options,” he said, adding boutique stores will probably be included as well.

He said Target will be the center’s anchor retailer, but as of this week could not announce yet other businesses leasing space. “There is a lot of interest and I think we’ll be able to announce soon.”

Williams said the center’s construction should conclude by year’s end, with just customization to the retail spaces once tenants are confirmed.

“The location is fantastic,” he said. “It is a very affluent area.”

Shea Properties other assets in the region include the Mercado del Barrio shopping center in Barrio Logan, the Winding Walk center in Chula Vista and another center under development in Carlsbad.

As for Phil’s BBQ, taking the place of the former Elephant Bar in Rancho Bernardo, the restaurant is now slated to open in about six months, a company spokesperson said. No other details were available.

Last March, when the local chain announced it was coming to RB to open its fourth free-standing location, it was to open by year’s end following “substantial” renovations to the 7,720-square-foot decades-old restaurant at 17051 W. Bernardo Drive. However, a few days ago the building was razed.

• Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage moved from its location across from McDonald’s to 16789 Bernardo Center Drive, which is several blocks north. A grand opening celebration is being planned for late September, said Manager Linda Harbert. She said it has 95 Realtors. • Sam Nawrocki and her husband, Weston Nawrocki, have opened Manzanita Roasting Company at Bernardo Winery, 13330 Paseo del Verano Norte, Rancho Bernardo. She said its coffee beans are accessed via direct trade from small growers in South America and Africa. Because they are specialty beans that are not blended, Nawrocki said the coffee has “very unique flavors and you can really taste the difference.”

The beans are being fresh roasted on site every week at the former Stone and Glass, which relocated to Escondido. Coffee can be purchased by the cup or as bagged coffee beans at V’s Coffee Shop, located at the winery. They plan to soon begin selling the coffee and roasted beans at off-site coffee shops too, she said.

• Cozy Posies recently relocated from The Mercado to Bernardo Winery, taking the place of Brant Bender Photography. Nawrocki, the winery’s marketing manager, said the photographer was rarely at the studio since much of his work is done off site and did not need the space. She said Cozy Posies is a full-service florist.

• There are just a few opportunities left to experience Bernardo Winery’s Art Walk. The summertime event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. each Friday through Sept. 25. The winery’s shops stay open late, additional food options are available due to rotating food trucks, there is musical entertainment and featured artists. Admission is free.
