Maranatha Christian football coach Michael Cole could not contain his excitement about his offense and his new defensive coordinator this season.

On Friday night, we found out why.

The Eagles lit up the scoreboard for 42 points in the first half before taking their foot off the gas in a 42-0 victory over Calvary Chapel Christian of Las Vegas, Nevada in Friday night’s season opener at Maranatha Christian High.

Junior quarterback Christian Cortes completed 5 of 8 passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns. He added a rushing touchdown, too. Running back Jake Bronson had eight carries for 90 yards and a TD, while Trevor Sheng had six carries for 25 yards and a score.

Matt DeWildt led all receivers with three catches for 69 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown reception. All of the Eagles’ starters were removed after a dominating first half.

The defense, led by former Del Norte defensive coach Kyle Duggin, forced seven turnovers. Kyle Lanzer and Andre Escoffier each had two interceptions. Lanzer picked off the first pass attempt by Calvary in the game and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown.
