Police shoot Santaluz man who allegedly attacked them

A San Diego police officer fatally shot a man who charged at officers with a knife at a Santaluz condominium late Thursday night, authorities said.

The name of the 60-year-old man who died was not released. Police also withheld the name of the officer who fired, but said he is a 24-year department veteran.

Residents called police about 11:40 p.m. to report an assault at a condo complex on Via Fiesta, a few blocks off Camino del Sur, homicide Lt. Paul Rorrison said in a news release.

A man at the complex told officers he’d been attacked by a resident.

Officers knocked on the door of the suspected assailant and a man came out holding a knife, Rorrison said. He said officers ordered the man to drop the knife, but he “immediately charged at one officer and attempted to stab him.”

One officer fired a single round at the man, wounding him in the torso. Officers started life-saving measures until paramedics got there, Rorrison said.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police had the streets and the man’s condo cordoned off with barrier tape through of the night.
